Small business owners and artists are worried about the future of their establishments and schedules. Musicians, servers, bartenders, cooks and retail employees are also wondering how they will pay their bills for the next few weeks. The COVID-19 crisis has caused problems most people could never have prepared for.
If every customer would take a few measures to support their favorite local businesses during these unsettling times it could really make a difference. Here are several ways that you can support a local business or individual.
1. Shop Local Whenever Possible
If a local business is open be sure and shop there if you can. If the inside is closed try using delivery, carry-out or curbside services. Buy extra or more than you normally would to help out. Ask friends and family if they need anything at that location while you are there and make the purchase for them.
2. Purchase Gift Cards and Gift Certificates
If you normally spend $50 a month at a business, try buying a $50 gift card for later. Purchase early birthday and Christmas gifts in the form of a gift certificate. If your business is doing well purchase gift cards as promos giveaways for your company.
3. Tip More Than Normal
Some restaurants and delivery companies may be open but their volume of business is going to be hurt. Tip an extra dollar or two if possible. If you normally give a large tip to your favorite waiter during the holidays think about giving that bonus now.
4. Donate To A Local Artist or Musician
Ask if your local freelance artists, bands and musicians have Venmo, PayPal or other online tipping accounts. Donate to these accounts if possible. Ask if they have tip jars. Offer a donation now for a promo later.
5. Buy Promotional Merchandise
Many restaurants, bands and artists sell their own promotional merchandise. Buy t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, CD’s, etc. Ask if they have any merchandise you can buy. It’s a great time to do some early shopping for the holidays and birthdays.
6. Buy Online
Ask local companies if they offer their products or services online. If they do, make purchases online and tell friends and family. Share websites and online stores on your social media accounts. Ask if an artist or instructor can help you or entertain you online.
7. Buy Someone A Meal
Ask your favorite worker, waitress or musician to lunch or dinner. One or two meals a week could really help out a struggling artist. Drive thru and eat in a park or drop by a local drive-in. Purchase a meal somewhere and drop it off at the home of someone in need.
8. Don’t Cancel
If possible, don’t cancel your monthly subscriptions or membership fees. Even if you miss a month or two of service try to look at it as a donation. Don’t cancel advertising or promotions. If a musician was already booked and paid try not to ask for a refund.
9. If You’re Sick Stay Home
Don’t shop at a local business if you are sick. If you get the owner or worker sick you can really hurt their productivity. Don’t worry other customers if you look and feel ill.
10. Share, Like and Comment
Visit your favorite business on their social media accounts and share their posts, like their content and comment every chance you get. Encourage them and let them know that you will be there for them. Do this daily until we get through these trying times.
Supporting local and small businesses is going to be vital during these crazy times. While the government may add financial support to help small businesses, customers will play a major role in helping them survive.
