Stayton PettyJohn and I have been best friends since we met in sixth grade in 1974. He was the new kid At McKinley Grade School having moved from Great Bend, Kansas. I was the sixth grader that got put into the class opposite all of my existing friends.
Stayton had several great things going for him. He was an only child and was the only kid we knew that had a trampoline. Needless to say, we became fast friends and I all but abandoned my old neighborhood gang.
We had moved away from my old friends closer to the grade school. I was a block to the west of the school and Stayton was a block east of the school. Our houses and the school were on west Broadway. We soon teamed up with three other boys on west Broadway and formed a tight crew of five.
Listen up as we discuss meeting in elementary school and growing up in Enid, Oklahoma in the 1970s.
Over the decades we became more than best friends and now consider each other as close as family.
The hair! Where’d the hair go? The pic above is most likely from 1974-75 and below is from 2022.
Stayton and I recorded an episode while sitting on his boat in Granbury, Texas. Here’s the podcast episode of A Shaggy Duck Life…
